Work has started on the much-anticipated £15.7m redevelopment of Wigan Bus Station. The first stage of the redevelopment includes the demolition of the old bus station on Hallgate to make way for initial ground works.

Once complete, the new bus station, delivered by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), will have improved waiting areas for passengers, a ticket and information outlet and retail facilities.

It is designed to support the economic growth of the town and enable people to get to and from their places of work, as well as Wigan’s shops, markets, restaurants and bars, in a safe and welcoming environment.

During the work, by contractor VINCI Construction UK, bus services will continue to run and bus stops have been temporarily relocated in the town centre. A temporary Travelshop has been opened on Hallgate to ensure TfGM can provide the same services to passengers. These arrangements will be in place until the new bus station opens, which is expected to be by the end of 2018.

Councillor Guy Harkin, Vice Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “I’m delighted demolition work has begun, opening up the site for construction to start. I’m sure passers-by will be interested in seeing the new, modern facility begin to take shape.

“This is an exciting time for Wigan – a new bus station is a key part in delivering an improved transport system for the borough that is fit for the decades ahead.”

Councillor David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “It’s great to see work starting at Wigan Bus Station, which will play a huge part in improving our transport system in the borough.

“Once the new bus station is complete, it will help support the economic growth of the borough and help people get to and from work and also enjoy the many great shops, restaurants and bars in the town.”

John Roberts, Regional Director for VINCI, also commented: “VINCI look forward to strengthening their ties with the local Wigan community and its residents, whilst delivering a state-of-the-art bus station for the future commuters in and out of the town to enjoy.”

Funding for the Wigan Bus Station development is being supported by central Government through the Greater Manchester Local Growth Deal Programme.
