Arriva bus passengers in Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Merseyside will be able to buy their bus tickets using contactless payments including Apple Pay and Google Pay – starting this summer.

Arriva North West will be rolling out a multi-million pound investment across all of its buses in the region this summer. It will be upgrading to brand new ticket machines which let customers use contactless payment technology on board.

It promises passengers quick, easy and secure payments via either debit and credit cards, or Apple and Google Pay. There’ll be no need to scramble for change at the bottom of your bag – just simple travel whenever and wherever you need it.

The switch from cash will also have a huge impact on boarding times; helping to speed up bus journeys in the long term.

Paying for bus travel by contactless is easy. Just hop on, tell the driver where you’d like to go, and tap your card or device to make an instant payment. Getting from A to B on Arriva buses couldn’t be simpler, and this technology is coming to all Arriva routes in the North West on selected dates in 2019.

Contactless allows you to pay for bus travel quickly using a debit or credit card, and you’ll be able to pay for travel in a single tap provided it’s under £30. Customers will still be able to pay by cash or use the Arriva m-ticket app if they prefer.

When will it be available in my area?

Arriva is rolling out contactless ticketing an area at a time so check the table below to find out when you can expect contactless on your local routes:

Introduction dateArea covered
31st March 2019Shropshire (for 2/A/B/C in Wrexham)
2nd June 2019Right across Merseyside
9th June 2019Cheshire and right across Manchester
16th June 2019Right across North Wales

The contactless system is brought to Arriva by Ticketer ETMs, the industry’s most innovative ticketing solution, and is designed to give passengers the widest possible range of payment options.

It isn’t currently known if there will eventually be fare capping where you’ll only be charged the maximum of a day or weekly ticket – like in London – or if you’ll be able to top up your Walrus or Get Me There smart card using contactless.
