In light of the upcoming closure of the Network Rail Wirral Loop Line track renewal, Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire is set to increase capacity on its X8 and 2 routes during the closure of the line, to help people travelling to and from Liverpool City Centre from Cheshire and Wirral.

During upgrade work to the Wirral train line, no trains will run between Wirral and Liverpool for six weeks from 3rd January 2017.  Then for 15 weeks, all week day Wirral trains will start and terminate at James Street, with weekend services starting and terminating at Birkenhead North and Birkenhead Central stations.

In order to help to combat disruption, Stagecoach will be increasing capacity across the route, switching from single to double decker buses throughout the closure on its X8 and 2 services which link Liverpool, Wirral and Cheshire.

The X8 route links enables passengers to travel between the two cities in little over one hour and runs seven days a week, every 30 minutes from Monday to Saturday, and every hour on Sundays and bank holidays.

The service travels from Chester Foregate Street and the rail station to Hoole Road, Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet and Ellesmere Port bus and rail stations. It then travels up to Bromborough and by motorway to Liverpool, where it terminates in the heart of the city centre.

Stagecoach’s number 2 service, runs every half an hour from Chester to Ellesmere Port, Bromborough, Birkenhead and Liverpool City Centre. Both routes will be serviced by brand-new double decker vehicles with free WiFi and USB charging points.

Rob Jones, Managing Director at Stagecoach, said: “The closure of the Wirral line is set to create significant disruption for passengers and commuters across the region. While delays are inevitable,we’re very pleased to be able to help to ease the inconvenience for people travelling to and from Liverpool from Wirral and Chester.

“When we re-launched the X8 and 2 services, we knew they would have an important role to play in connecting communities in Chester and Liverpool, and we’re very pleased to be able to offer people an affordable, convenient transport alternative, while the Wirral line is being updated. Busy commuters will also be able to benefit from the free WiFi – helping them to have a productive commute.”

I presume these will be the ones that will then go across to Cambridge for the Park and Ride.

Hi Mike, from what we understand is that it will be the latter 15 of the batch that will be used on the 2 & X8.
