Stagecoach Manchester has further increased its green credentials by introducing 38 new Alexander Dennis Enviro400H electric-hybrids into service throughout the city.

The latest batch of deliveries brings the total hybrid buses in the Manchester fleet up to 128, meaning that over a quarter of Stagecoach Manchester’s Enviro400s are of the hybrid variant. The introduction of the Hybrid fleet follows grants of almost £10 million from the government’s Green Bus Fund which supports low-carbon public transport throughout the country.

Route 111 from Manchester Piccadilly to Southern Cemetery carries 1.9 million passengers annually, which is the latest to go green with the introduction of 11 Enviro400H hybrid buses, these are identifiable due to the green branding. It hasn’t been cheap for the Top City Operator 2013 as this route alone has received a £3 million investment to improve the service. With this, all 128 Stagecoach Manchester hybrid buses now offer free WiFi to its passengers – on eight different routes throughout the region.

Stagecoach Manchester’s managing director, Christopher Bowles, commented: “The investment in new hybrid buses for this popular route demonstrates our continued commitment to providing the best possible service for our passengers, while also trying to improve our impact on the environment.

“This route is a lifeline for many passengers, helping them get to work or to the shops and we hope the new buses make their journeys more comfortable and enjoyable.”

Earlier this year, CityConnect 50 to Salford also went green with 14 of the new hybrid buses representing an investment of investing over £3.5 million. Unlike route 111, CityConnect 50 features light blue route branding along with the distinctive green livery.

A number of Stagecoach Manchester’s hybrids feature route branding for the 192, which is often considered to be the busiest bus route in the country. With a frequency of at least every 10 minutes and annual passenger numbers in excess of 9 million, service 192 is the perfect route to operate the Enviro400Hs.
