Blackpool Transport is continuing its fleet renewal programme with the introduction of a further 20 Alexander Dennis Enviro400 City buses.
In 2015, Blackpool Transport unveiled its five-year plan to completely update its entire bus fleet by March 2020. Inclusive of this latest batch of new buses, Blackpool Transport has taken delivery of 65 high specification vehicles in the past two and a half years. Ten of these were single deck, with the remainder being double deck.
The Alexander Dennis Enviro400 City has become a common sight on Blackpool’s streets ever since the first batch of ten vehicles entered service in April of last year, followed by another 25 examples earlier this year. This batch of twenty Enviro400 Citys, the second to be delivered this year and third overall, represents an investment of £4.6 million into the fleet.
However, these new buses won’t be entering service on Blackpool Transport’s own route network until Spring 2018, because they will initially operate on rail replacement bus services between Blackpool North, Blackpool South and Preston railway stations, with the line between Preston and Blackpool North due to be electrified over the winter.
At the conclusion of the rail replacement service, a further four Enviro400 Citys are due to be delivered. It is anticipated all 24 vehicles will then replace the remaining East Lancs Coachbuilders bodied double deckers which were acquired from Bus Vannin between 2011 and 2012.
As per the other examples in the fleet, these Enviro400 Citys also sport the grey and yellow Palladium livery first introduced in 2015, albeit with yellow relief at the front, along with the distinctive glazed staircase panels. Under the bonnet, the Enviro400 City is powered by a Euro VI emissions compliant Cummins 6.7 litre diesel engine, which is coupled to a Voith gearbox.
On board, passengers are able to take advantage of complimentary WiFi, at your seat USB charging points for mobile phones and tablets in the lower saloon, as well as four facing seating arrangements with tables found in the upper saloon. Other features include wood effect flooring, e-leather seating and next stop announcements.
For those interested, the details of the new Enviro400 Citys are as follows: SN67 WZA (436), SN67 WZB (437), SN67 WZC (438), SN67 WZD (439), SN67 WZE (440), SN67 WZF (441), SN67 WZG (442), SN67 WZH (443), SN67 WZJ (444), SN67 WZK (445), SN67 WZL (446), SN67 WZM (447), SN67 WZO (448), SN67 WZP (449), SN67 WZR (450), SN67 WZS (451), SN67 WZT (452), SN67 WZU (453), SN67 WZV (454) and SN67 WZW (455).
Next Spring, Blackpool Transport is expected to take delivery of a further four Enviro400 Citys, with eighteen brand new single deck vehicles expected to arrive in the Autumn as part of a continued further investment into the updating the operator’s bus fleet.
