A number of bus operators on in Merseyside and from further afield have stepped in to operate a number of bus routes which were previously operated by former bus company Avon Buses.
After some 37 years serving the people of the Wirral and latterly Liverpool too, Prenton based independent operator Avon Buses ceased operations last month. At the time, they were the largest independent operator in Wirral.
From 5th November 2018, four operators commenced operating the then eighteen routes which had originally been saved. However, further alterations are afoot to reduce this to sixteen services with service alterations by Arriva North West (see below).
Merseytravel has confirmed that paper timetables of the revised routes will be available at information outlets from 12th November 2018, with timetable information at bus stops due to be updated as soon as possible.
Arriva North West
Merseyside’s largest operator, Arriva North West, took on the following routes. These are operated from their Birkenhead depot, with additional vehicles transferred from other depots in the North West.
10/10A – New Brighton to Liscard/Arrowe Park Hospital.
83A – Birkenhead to West Kirby (an additional 07:30 departure from Birkenhead Bus Station has been introduced).
However, these services were put in place by Arriva, on a short-term basis, immediately after it was confirmed that Avon had ceased to operate. To mitigate the impact of the loss of services on the Wirral.
It has been announced this week by Merseytravel that Arriva North West will no longer be operating the 10/10A and 83A services from the 18th November 2018 and they will be withdrawn.
Fortunately for passengers of services 10/10A and 83A, Arriva is altering some of its current services to reflect the withdrawal of the former Avon Buses routes. The following services change will occur on the 18th November 2018 (418) and 20th January 2019 (407).
407 – Extended from Moreton Cross to Hoylake and West Kirby replacing part of the withdrawn 83A services. No longer serving Town Meadow Lane.
418 – Rerouted in Prenton to operate via Prenton Hall Road and Prenton Lane instead of via Woodchurch Road, Sainsbury’s replacing part of the withdrawn 83A service.
In addition, it was announced recently in the Liverpool Echo that Arriva North West together with Merseytravel is currently evaluating the 408 and 409 services which operate between Birkenhead and Wallasey. In the near future, members of the public are to be asked for feedback about their use of these routes. We will keep you updated with any developments.
Stagecoach Merseyside has commenced operation of a total of six routes, as well as two school bus services. Some of these will be operated by six Alexander Dennis Enviro200s which have transferred from Stagecoach London’s Catford depot.
For those who are interested in the registrations of these vehicles are as follows; LX58 CAU (36314), LX58 CAV (36315), LX58 CBF (36316), LX58 CBO (36317), LX58 CBU (36318) and LX58 CBV (36319).
16/16A and 17 – Moreton Cross to Eastham Rake (extended from Clatterbridge Hospital. This route also serves Spital, Bromborough, Mill Park and Raby Mere).
22/X22 – Moreton to Chester extended to serve Sandbrook Estate in Moreton.
80 – Newton circular via Frankby.
82 – Greasby circular via Caldy and Irby Village.
91 – Claughton and Oxton circular (this route no longer serves Claughton, Holm Lane or Prenton Dell Road).
School services 628 and 652 (formerly numbered 17S).
In addition to the above, a revised service 38 will serve Eastham Ferry on an hourly basis via Bromborough Cross, Mill Park and Eastham Village.
Two of Merseyside’s independent stage-carriage operators have taken on the following routes:
73 – Heswall to Poulton Lancelyn (new service operated by Eazibus).
144 – Bootle New Strand to Litherland (now operated by Hattons, but no longer serves Stanley Road).
Interestingly since the demise of Avon Buses, the 144 service has been operated by HTL Buses, Warrington’s Own Buses and now Hattons.
Regrettably, a number of services have been withdrawn, with these including routes 18, 77/77A, 84, 85, 88A 492/495 (evenings & Sundays) and school service 613 on the Wirral and routes 122, 821 and C5 in Liverpool.
