The Engineering Support Unit team at the Blackburn Bus Company’s Intack depot has won the coveted Team of the Year award at their employer Transdev’s Amazing Awards.

The team provides support for all six of parent company Transdev’s depots across Lancashire and Yorkshire, responding quickly to get buses back on the road after major accident damage or breakdowns – and it’s credited with transforming dozens of buses over the past 12 months, with major refurbishment programmes which have helped the firm to launch new services across the North.

Long-serving Blackburn engineer Pete Johnson was also among the winners at last night’s awards ceremony, receiving the Engineer of the Year award for his hard work to keep the company’s buses safely on the road while minimising breakdowns.

And Blackburn bus driver Moshin Malek won the ‘Green Road Champion’ award for his smooth, safe and economical driving, with every trip he makes reviewed independently by his manager Karl Bray to ensure the highest standards are maintained.

The ‘Green Road’ system uses advanced computerised technology to constantly track every bus in The Blackburn Bus Company’s fleet, to deliver a more comfortable journey while improving driver safety and reducing fuel consumption, vehicle wear and tear and accidents.

Staff from six Transdev bus companies across the North of England, including The Harrogate Bus Company, voted for their favourites to make the shortlist for the annual awards.

The Blackburn Bus Company team joined other winners and finalists from Transdev’s six depots in Yorkshire and Lancashire – in Blackburn, Burnley, Keighley, Harrogate, York and Malton – at last night’s presentation in Bradford, co-hosted by comedian, broadcaster Paul Sinha (aka ‘The Sinnerman’ from ITV’s hit game show ‘The Chase’, and BBC North West Tonight TV and radio presenter Dianne Oxberry.

Alex Hornby, CEO of Transdev in Yorkshire and Lancashire said: “The Engineering Support Unit in Blackburn is a small but highly efficient team which keeps all the other depots performing at the highest level.

“It’s a close-knit group full of characters, and as well as keeping our buses on the road, it’s performed miraculous transformations to many buses over the last 12 months. Among its many notable successes are the good-as-new buses on our recently-launched Cityzap express between Manchester and Leeds, and on our busy route 1 between Blackburn and Bolton, both of which are already proving very popular with our customers.

“Our Engineer of the Year Pete Johnson has 42 years of experience within the bus industry, and is a hugely popular member of the team at Blackburn. Pete’s always eager to help and is currently assisting with re-organising the depot fitters’ shift roster.

“Meanwhile Moshin Malek has embraced the Green Road driver and vehicle performance monitoring system right from day one. Over the last 12 months, Moshin has made it his personal mission to achieve a 100 per cent perfect score on every trip he drives for us.

“These amazing people are at the very heart of what makes a successful business, and whether they drive our customers safely to their destination, make sure every bus is safe and reliable, or provide the best support behind the scenes, our fantastic people make our company the success it is.

“The high standards set by everyone on the shortlist for this year’s Amazing Awards made choosing our winners a challenging, yet enjoyable, task.”

Over 130 nominees and their partners attended the awards evening, held last night at the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford.

The winners of the seven coveted Amazing Awards were each directly nominated by their own colleagues, and selected from a shortlist of the company’s finest teams and individuals.

Alex Hornby said: “At the heart of our company, we believe in three things – employing people who are happy to work with us, serving people who are proud to be our customers, and creating a business which is innovative and successful.

“Our core values, passion, partnership, performance and commitment shine through in every one of our Amazing Awards winners. We’re proud to celebrate everything that’s good about the people who deliver the highest standard of service for our customers, every day.”

Several of Transdev’s suppliers joined local authority representatives at the Amazing Awards presentation.
