Visitors to the new bus interchange in Bolton will be treated to surprise theatrical and musical performances next month as part of the local Octagon Theatre’s ground-breaking production of Summer Holiday.
The performance, which has been developed by the Octagon in partnership with Transport for Greater Manchester, is part of a new thespian approach that will see performances taken outside of the theatre to various locations.
The interchange has been chosen as the starting point for the theatre’s first-ever full-scale promenade piece due to its spacious modern design, accessibility and popularity. A launch event was held at the interchange’s coach depot earlier this week where Elizabeth Newman, Artistic Director at the Octagon Theatre, introduced the production and explained the creative thought process behind it.
Following the opening performance in front of bus and rail passengers, the cast and spectators will board six double decker buses to join in with the singing en route to nearby Victoria Square, where they will witness the ‘mini-crash’ scene, before going to the Octagon to watch the rest of the show.
Paul Overend, Bolton Interchange Manager, said: “We are delighted to work with the Octagon Theatre to bring live performances of the classic musical Summer Holiday to Bolton Interchange. We hope that the show will be a big success and provide a unique, immersive experience for the audience.
“The interchange is an impressive gateway to Bolton town centre and it’s great to make the most of this amazing space to provide entertainment for families in Bolton.”
Elizabeth Newman said: “We wanted to offer our audiences some exciting and fun experiences and since producing Singin’ in the Rain we’ve been keen to create another joyous musical – so Summer Holiday is the perfect show to begin our adventures!
“It will be an ambitious staging of the musical, with talented actor-musicians singing, dancing and playing musical instruments in locations across Bolton.”
Summer Holiday will be playing at Bolton Interchange and Octagon Theatre between Thursday 31st May and Saturday 23nd June 2018.
